Blog Is Your Dog Overindulging? Managing Treat Intake During the Holidays
The holidays are a wonderful time to spoil our pups — but all that extra snacking can sneak up on their waistline (and digestion). Between holiday guests, festive treats, and irresistible puppy-dog eyes, it’s easy to let dogs eat more than they should. Here’s how to keep the holiday indulgence fun and healthy.
How Much Is Too Much?
Treats should generally make up no more than about 10% of your dog’s daily calories. That means if your dog’s daily energy requirement is around 400 calories, no more than ~40 calories should come from treats — even during celebrations.
It’s easy to underestimate calories from snacks: a small piece of holiday ham or cheese can clock in more calories than you think. The trick is to keep the calorie balance in mind. If Fido gets a few extra bites during a party, reduce treats at other times of day to stay within a healthy range.
Choose Smart Treats
Instead of high-fat, high-sugar snacks, opt for lower-calorie goodies such as:
- Small cubes of cooked sweet potato or carrots
- Plain apple slices (no seeds)
- Green beans or frozen peas
These are tasty treats that add nutrients without blowing your dog’s daily calories out of the water.
Remember Hidden Calories
It’s not just “official” treats that count. Table scraps under the table, marshmallow bits from dessert, or gravy from your holiday plate all contribute calories — often without us noticing. Keep an eye (and a mental tally) on everything your dog eats throughout the day.
Fun Alternatives to Food Rewards
Dogs love attention just as much as snacks! Use play, belly rubs, or a quick game of fetch as rewards during training or holiday hustle — great for bonding and managing calories.
By planning ahead and maintaining treat balance, your dog stays healthy and you still get to spread the holiday cheer!
